How to Style a Coffee Table

One of My Favourite Things to Style…

I really do love to style a coffee table. It’s one of those simple surfaces that doesn’t take that much to turn into something fabulous. In fact, over the years, I’ve got it down to three steps.

Styling a coffee table is key to showing off your personality and interior style in your home. Often overlooked and used as a dumping ground, it’s a surface that with a few tweaks can completely elevate your space.

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve got the art of styling a coffee table down to three steps. So if you’re wanting to change up your coffee table right now, let’s get started with step one…

START WITH A TRAY.

Since I got this rattan tray, I will never not have a coffee table with some form of tray on top of it. It’s such a good piece for gathering bits and bobs that end up on the surface. It’s great for hiding remotes, keeping a hold of your coasters and just generally a great piece for styling. You don’t have to go as large as I’ve gone when it comes to getting your own tray. Just something simple that will allow you to layer bits into it or to the side of it.

USE COFFEE TABLE BOOKS FOR LAYERING.

If you’re a long time reader you’ll have known this tip was coming. I’m a huge fan of coffee table books and how to decorate with them. They are a great way of adding interest and personality. Go with ones in your favourite subject, it will speak about who you are as a person without you needing to say anything. Of course, mine are in interiors, however, recently I’ve started investing in some gardening books.

COMPLETE WITH A FEW DECORATIVE OBJECTS.

The final bit to when you style your coffee table is to add some decorative pieces. This can be literally anything that you love and brings interest to your home. I love a couple of small pieces, like these string of beads, to add interest at a low level. To bring the eye up, go for something sculptural. Something that’s been happening more and more is investing in some bouquets and having some on display throughout the week. If you’re not into flowers or don’t want to spend the pennies every week, then go for a sculpture or a candle to add to the overall look.
