Switching Things Up with My WFH Routine…

I’m coming up on working from home for a year and my WFH routine has been switched up time and time again. When you are not used to working from home, you have to keep yourself motivated, elevate it. I’ve found that the secret to surviving lockdown and not going crazy working and living in the same space is to establish a routine. I’ve always believed that the secret to your future is hidden in your daily routine. This could not be more true when it comes to your WFH routine. If you’re going to have any success you need to establish little moments that are going to keep you motivated throughout the day. Here are my top tips on how to elevate your work from home routine…

FAKE A COMMUTE.

I’ve started adding this and it’s completely changed my morning! It seems crazy (I took a poll on Instagram), but the act of putting on your shoes and getting outside makes the world of difference. My commute is about 15 minutes long, around a park near me. I put on my air pods and put on a good podcast. It’s a simple moment in time where I can reset myself and be ready for the day.

And yes, I do the commute home after work. In the evening I put my shoes back on and I take the same route in the opposite direction. Again, resetting myself and allowing myself to turn my work brain off ready to relax for the end of the day.

TAKE A MOMENT TO TAKE SPONTANEOUS BREAKS.

Much like if you were working in the office, taking moments to step away from your desk is an essential part of elevating your work from home routine. For me, it’s all about giving my eyes a rest. I like to grab another cuppa, check my messages and even get up to date on the news.

It’s also recommended to take the time to not talk shop with work colleagues. When you’re in the office, it’s not all business. Step back from projects to discuss things going on and have some light moments. Little breathers so you can reset and really get stuck into the projects you’re working on.

GET PROPERLY DRESSED FOR THE DAY.

Probably the biggest battle we’ve all had when it comes to working from home, but if you truly want a day where you succeed, you need to get dressed. I’m talking no leggings, ‘proper’ clothes that you would walk out of the door in. Sure, sometimes I am wearing leggings, but instead of the usual ones that I wear to workout in, I’m in stylish leather-look ones.

One thing I was missing was putting on my blazers, so I’ve made sure that I wear it once or twice a week. Trust me when I say it’s worth dressing up for a week as if you’re heading to the office. Just see how you feel at the end of it. I’m guessing you’ll feel much better than if you were in sweats.
