5 Design Tips to Apply to Any Size Home
Design Tips to help you create the Home You’ll Love…
Over the years of changing up my space and working for an interiors company, I’ve come across a few design tips that have been sure fire in creating a home you want to spend time in. It’s taken to get my design skills up to where they are but I’m so glad to have put that effort in. You lot are always so lovely on Instagram about the look and feel of my home. So I decided to round up my top skills for you, so you too can create a space you’ll love.
The best thing about these tips is that they can be used in any space. Regardless of how small (or how grand) your room is, these tips will help you create a curated space. These are also in regardless to your own personal interior style. They are the basic structure of interior design. Once applied you are going to love your home and hanging out in it, I promise…
ALWAYS GO WITH LARGE ARTWORK.
Filling your walls with artwork is a great place when it comes to decorating your home. Going oversized with the art will make your room appear larger than it is. Having a small piece just floating in the middle of a wall doesn’t look stylised and is a complete faux-par. If you think it might be on the tad small size, go for the next one up and let it take centre stage in your home.
BUY A GOOD MIRROR.
My number one design tip. Mirrors make such a difference to a room. Mirrors can also be used as artwork, as I have done above my bed frame. When it comes to mirror, this is where I would invest your money in. Larger mirrors helps to bounce light across the room, making the space fill bigger and grander than it is. Within most rooms I would recommend a wall mirror. Across the floors of your home (if you live in a multi-story house) I’d have at least a floor mirror on each. Usually on the top floor you’ll have one in your bedroom. My plan is to invest in on to go in the living room, a place to check my outfit before I leave for the day and again, to increase the size of my home…
NEVER FORGET ABOUT YOUR LIGHTING.
Something that I have learnt from working for an interiors company is to never, ever forget about your lighting. Lighting will always make or break a room. You have to consider if you have enough of it, the colour/ tone of the bulb for each room and the general style of the lighting. When it comes to the tone of the bulb, you have to be aware of the way your room is facing. For example, our living room is North facing, so our bulbs have a warmer tint to them to help make the space cosier. As with everything, larger light can make the room look grander and more put together.
CONSIDER FURNITURE THAT DOUBLES IT’S DUTY.
Making the most of your furniture can help maximise your space and make the room more livable. Choosing furniture that looks both fabulous and is functional will make your life so much easier. TV cabinets with drawer space, storage ottomans are great for styling a space and concealing items you don’t want on display. Perfect for creating a curated looking home.
DIVIDE YOUR SPACE.
With many of us living and working in our home, the idea of dividing and breaking up your space will make it look and feel like a better space to live and making it more functional. Giving your room different zones will make them work better for your lifestyle. They will also feel more thoughtfully designed and purposeful. An example of this can be our living room. We used our sofa to divide the room, creating an entryway. This allowed us to feel like we’re not walking straight into the living room and is a practical place for us to leave things without cluttering up the rest of the room.
