The Secret to That Perfect Looking Room…

I’ve been perfect my design formula for a while, getting my rooms looking ‘just right’.As someone who works for an interiors company but also blogs about her home on Instagram. I’ve always been into interior design, ever since I would constantly change up my childhood bedroom.

Even though we live in a rental home, I do everything I can to make it feel like a home. This is the first rental where I’ve put a stamp on the place. I’m so glad I did, the place feels so cosy, something I’ve discovered is hugely important. Especially during this past couple of months. It’s taken work and patience but we’re getting there with our home.

Creating the perfect takes some effort, but if you follow the correct design formula, you too can transform your space into somewhere you love spending time in…

THE FOUNDATION.

The foundation of your home is the first layer to creating the perfect home. The foundation is the key to everything, it’s the glue that pulls everything together. Typically, the foundation creates a function and informs how the room will be used. Taking the living room as an example, your foundation is going to be your couch, chairs and coffee table.

When it comes to building your foundation, you don’t have to start from scratch. Start with the pieces you have and how they can be upgraded. Perhaps you give your couch a facelift with a new cover or paint your coffee table. Rather than making an expensive purchase, start with what you’ve got and see where it will take you.

PERSONALISATION.

The next layer of the design formula is giving your home those personal touches that set your home apart from the rest. This is your personal photographs, a stack of Vogue magazines (I have many of them) or vintage cameras. When you’re building this second layer, you have to ask yourself how/ who you want to be reflected in the room. When you have multiple personalities in the home you want to make sure they are all reflected. For my husband, that’s showing off his photography habit and artbook. For me, it’s my large collection of coffee table books and love for fashion. Consider adding these elements to be reflected in your environment.

The other thing to consider is what memories you want to be reminded of in your home. I have figurines from our travels, bits that remind us of our relationship and, of course, memories from our wedding day. They are great conversation starters and give your home those touches that turn a house into a home.

LUXURIES AND MUST-HAVES.

Finally, the next layer is all about those extra details that bring joy, energy and sparkle to your every day. This can be that house plant you’ve been dying to get, extra cushions and throws to make your home feel cosy. This is the layer where you should put your money. Or is it investing in that candle that you’ve been lusting after for ages or that plate sets that you love yo whip out on special occasions?  Whatever you’ve been lusting after for a long time, that’s what you need to invest in.

However, the luxuries don’t have to been items that you use on the off-chance. I love investing in everyday objects, elevating them. That way every day is a luxury day. I’m slowly doing this across our home. Honestly, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done and recommended it to everyone.
