The Foundations of Any Room…

When it comes to buying the perfect rug for your home, it’s a lot easier than people think. However, so many people get it wrong. Personally, I think a rug is the first thing you think off when designing a room. It’s the foundation that you set everything else up in your room with. Buying the perfect rug was my first thought when we signed up to our rental home and will be the first thing when we eventually buy our home.

If you’re looking to decorate a new home or just need some general guidance on how to buy a rug, then let me talk you through the steps that I go when I purchase a new rug…

GO LARGE ALWAYS.

The number one mistake that people make comes down to the size of the rug. If your rug is too small, it will throw the whole balance of your room off. If anything, it’s best too big than too small. A rug should be large enough so that your furniture fits on it correctly. However, there’s viewing room for you to see the gorgeous rug.

For example, in your living room, the rug should be large enough so that the front legs of your chairs/ sofas can rest fully on it. There should then be a gap large enough between your sofa and coffee table for you to walk around (and your coffee table should rest in the middle of the rug). Finally, there should be a border of up to 8″ around your furniture, to truly anchor the room.

If you’re looking for a rug for your dining room, your chairs should sit fully on the rug with a large enough border around the edge for you to push your chair out and it still to be on the rug.

THINK ABOUT THE TEXTURE.

Getting the texture right for which room you’re wanting to put the rug in. When buying a rug you want it to look gorgeous, but also be practical. For example, a soft fluffy Berber rug with a looser weave is great for a living room or bedroom, but not a dining room. For high traffic areas or places that involve food, you may want to consider a tighter weave so that it’s easier to clean just in case of any food spillages. Whilst a lot of people think I buy things purely for an Instagramable home, I’m very much a practical girl also.

THINK ABOUT COLOUR OR PATTERN.

Though I’m a neutral girl, I do like to add some colour into my home with my accessories. When buying a rug, consider how you’d like to decorate the rest of your home. I’d always say go the opposite to your furniture when purchasing a rug. For example, if you’re going for quite plain, neutral furniture then look for a patterned rug or something with colour. If you’re crushing on that blush pink sofa, then perhaps look to go for a lighter, neutral rug. It’s all about balance and creating cohesion in your home. Sometimes the colour of the rug in its natural texture (such as burlap) is stunning. That should speak for itself.
