How to Style a Bed Perfectly

A little bit of styling goes a long way…

Hands up those who make their bed every day? I’m guessing not many hands went up. Mine would have shot up- I cannot start my day without making my bed. I can’t help it. The Type-A person inside me can’t leave the bed messy at all. I just love the look of a styled bed. And, from all your lovely comments that you leave me on my Instagram feed, you like the way that I do it too.

I think one of the things that can put people off overly styling the bed is the time in the morning. And I get it. No one want’s to spend hours throwing a million and one cushions back onto a bed, only to take them off again 12+ hours later. This is where I hope that some of my tips will come in handy. I’m not suggesting that you make the bed look like a hotel suite. There are a few things that you can do style a bed with very little effort…

START WITH THE BASICS.

Let’s talk about bedding. One trick that I learnt from the stylist who was moving things around during the shooting of my home for Refinery 29 was to have a king-size quilt on a double bed. I am never going back and I urge anyone who is looking to decorate or improve their bedroom decor to get one. My bed feels like a fluffy cloud! Our quilt and pillows are from Ikea (good old classic!) We do, however, have a memory foam pillow each from Leesa. Great for next support.

For our quilt and pillow covers, I love getting all my linens from Christys. Currently on my bed is this 400 thread count– so soft like a cloud. It takes a while for me to get out of bed cause it’s so comfy!

TIME TO LAYER.

Now let’s talk throws. It’s amazing how something so practical can help elevate the style of a bed. Our throw is also from Ikea, though it’s old. In fact, I’m looking to invest in a new one, I’ve just haven’t found the right one yet. Or if I have, they are out of my price range.

The good thing about a throw is it’s a great way to add colour, texture and fun to your bed. Especially if you’re like me and addicted to white bedding.

EMBRACE COLOUR & TEXTURE.

Speaking of colour with your throws, it can be really easy to stick to plain bedding. It doesn’t even have to be plain white, a solid block of colour or pattern is not inviting at all. I love white bedding, but also love white interiors. to ensure that we don’t live in a solid white box, I added some dusty pink linen pillows behind the main pillows. A little pop of colour is essential when you style a bed.

The texture is also very important when it comes to styling a bed. From the bed linens to the throws and the pillows. Mixing up the textures adds a little something extra to a room and can really elevate your bedroom.

AND FINALLY, A FEW PILLOWS.

And, of course, you have to add some pillows when you style a bed. Now, I’m not saying you need a million pillows. At the moment, I only have three pillows on my bed, which I don’t think is that bad actually. All my pillows are from Homesense, great finds on a random trip. I would love to add more, still trying to find a few more. For ultimate style, always have an odd number and never have more than seven at max on the bed (five is a very comfortable number).
