How to Update Your Space Without Spending a Penny
Because you don’t have to spend a lot to improve your home…
One of my biggest challenges when it comes to updating our home is wanting to improve our space without spending a lot of money. As much as I would love to keep buying new things for our rental, Anthropologie is not going to pay for my bills! So there is the odd month whereby my redecorating budget is zero. But my home is feeling a little stuck and you want to give it an update. Luckily, I have a few tips that allow me to do some decorating without spending…
SWAP IT UP.
I’m constantly moving things around our home (it’s no wonder Lee can’t find a thing). Recently, I’ve moved some things around on this shelving unit, mainly moving the radio up to the top shelf. I also move around furniture where possible, like the sofa or a few side tables. Moving things around and finding new combinations is a great way of decorating without spending.
Have a go at changing the room around and seeing how it feels. It may surprise you different the room looks and feels. You might be surprised. Who knew a childhood of changing my bedroom around would lead to a lifelong habit and actually saving some pennies.
PURGE THE CLUTTER.
Do you know what makes a huge difference in how a room looks and is free? Cleaning up the junk. Spend an hour or two actually clearing your home and getting rid of clutter. So get throwing, filing and organising. Crowding lots of things in a room can make it feel small, so get rid of anything unwanted or shouldn’t be there. A bit of blank space is sometimes exactly what we need to feel a little lighter and our space to feel gorgeous.
CONSIDER UPCYCLING.
Okay, this one technically involves spending a bit of money, but not too much. I promise. Upcycling is a great way of making something new and it helps the planet. I get so many compliments on these T-bar handles on my TV cabinet on my Instagram. One of the best upcycles I’ve done.
I’m sure your parents have some unwanted furniture that you can happily take off their hands for free. Or check out your local free markets to see if there is any unwanted furniture that no one wants. So take what you can for free and invest in some bits to give it a new lease of life. A few handles here, a bit of paint there. It will be worth it in the end.
What are your top tips for decorating without spending?
Purging the clutter always makes my place feel brand new 🙂 Love it!
