I hate to admit it, but I am actually a morning person. Whilst I would love to pretend I’m one of those casual people who love lie-ins and can stay up till 1 am, it’s just not me. I wake up early, I go to bed before 10 pm most nights. On a Sunday I can get two loads of washing done, make myself breakfast, showered, dressed and a kitchen cleaned before 9 am. Sorry if that made anyone feel sick. Most of my girlfriends got tired from just reading the sentence.
I’ve not always been a morning person. It’s taken a while to become that person. At whilst you cannot speak to me for the first hour when I wake up (and have at least two coffees flowing through my veins) but trust me. It’s so easy to become a morning person, just take it one step at a time…
Become a morning person
Go to bed and wake up at the same time. It’s so tempting to stay up till late on the weekends and sleep in till noon but I’ve found the thing that’s helped me brace the mornings. So my bedtime is between 9 pm- 11 pm and I wake up at 6:45 am every weekday morning. The latest I’ll get up on the weekends is 8 am (such a rebel!) Usually it’s 7 am.(and did shifts- the worse!) I found that my sleep routine was completely off and I was just a walking zombie. Embrace the grandma life and I promise you, you’ll feel so much better.
No technology 30 mins prior to going to sleep. This is such a huge one for me. Did you know that every time you look at a screen, it takes 15 mins for your brain to switch off? So you’re scrolling Instagram, put your phone down and try to fall asleep. After ten mins you’re still awake so you think ‘I’ll just check what’s going on on Twitter.’ And damn! Your 15 mins start again. So strictly speaking, the phone goes down half an hour before I go nap time. Doesn’t mean I lie awake twiddling my thumbs. I read a book or magazine. Something to switch my brain off.
Do what you need to do to get up. Most articles tell you to wake up, drink a pint of water and do some meditation. Personally, that will never work for me. I need coffee in my system. So for you, if it’s flicking through a magazine or scrolling through your emails; do what you need to do to wake up. Something like just sitting up in bed, even if you do nothing, is enough to get you moving!
Bright & early start
Get yourself a nighttime skincare routine. One thing that allows me to whine down at the end of a working day is a good skincare routine. I take great pleasure in spending a good half an hour cleaning and putting facial oil on my skin. Create a relaxing, calming environment. I may be a tidy freak when it comes to my home, but there’s a reason for it. For one, I’m a type A person with a crown on top. But also, the tidier my environment, the calmer I feel. Therefore when my room is neat and tidy, I just feel so much more relaxed and know I’m going to sleep so much better. Now I’m not saying you’ve got to be as organised as my room (I dare for clothes to be out of place in my wardrobe…) but keeping everything tidy will allow for you to have a great night sleep. The better your sleep is, the less horrified your alarm clock will sound in the morning.
